Procedures

1. Select elodea with proper color and size to inject with a .5 molar solution of sucrose
2. Put the treated elodea in to individual bags
3. Create water baths at temperatures of 20oC, 0oC, -20oC, -40oC
A. to reach 20oC put regular water in a large beaker
B. to reach 0oC add ice to water in a large beaker
C. to reach -20oC mix NaCl and ice at a 1:3 ratio with water in a large beaker
D. to reach -40oC mix CaCl2.6 H2O and ice at a 1:0.8 ratio with water in a large beaker
4. Place five elodea plants in each bath
5. Leave plants in bath for 20 minutes
6. Make 10L of 5% baking soda solution
7. Put the pieces of elodea into different beakers with 450ml of 5% baking soda solution
8. Place wide end of funnel over elodea
9. Fill test tubes with 50ml of solution
10. Place test tube over funnel without letting air in
11. Place beakers in good lighting
12. Record the displacement of O2 with a ruler for 5 days each day subtracting previous total from the new total.
